Brian and I have been coordinating the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University classes since we got married in 2007, and it has been a blessing to us to be involved and help other families change their lives. We had a past class member come up to us a few weeks ago at church to tell us they were debt free!! Another story, two young past class members and recent college graduates were married shortly after finishing the class, quickly became debt free after getting married and are now coordinating a class at their church in Oregon. So inspiring!
The following story is one of the reasons why Brian and I do what we do...we dream to be able to get to this point and be able to give money away to help other people in need. Reading this brings tears to my eyes! We are still working on paying off our debt, but hope is in sight, and this helps fuel that hope!
From the coordinator newsletter:
The $8,000 Miracle!
One FPU class in Oklahoma recently experienced an incredible act of giving.
The class had just finished their first meeting when an anonymous man contacted Steve Ely, the class coordinator and senior pastor at Passion Church in Bethany, Oklahoma.
"This guy and his wife felt like they needed to begin to use their finances to help others, and FPU had positioned them to do so," Steve said.
"They are constantly looking for ways to help others … They searched the local FPU classes and found our class on Dave's website, so they enrolled their friend in the class. After the first night, I received an email from this guy asking me to call him."
Steve and the stranger talked on the phone and set up a meeting to have coffee. "He asked me how many first-time enrollees we had in the class. I had to stop and count and told him we had eight."
During their time together, Steve was floored by this man's offer. "He told me his story … and handed me eight envelopes with $1,000 in each. He informed me that he and his wife wanted to fund all eight families' baby emergency funds so they could jump ahead and begin working on their debt snowballs."
There was only one "catch": the man and his wife wanted to stay completely anonymous. "I asked him if he wanted to write a check to the church so that they would get tax credit for it. He refused and said they wanted no credit."
When Steve presented the money to all of the class members, he said the scene was unbelievable. "There were tears, shouting, amazement and sheer joy," he said.
"For several of these folks, due to their dire financial condition, Baby Step 1 was going to take eight months to complete, so this was an absolute miracle."
He said he will never forget the experience and that it has motivated his class members even more.
"That was probably the single most generous act I have been a part of. It has inspired many of the class members to try harder to become debt-free so that they can do something like this for someone else!"
