9 weeks and no puking..

Is that kind of a crude title? sorry.

As people often ask pregnant women..."how are you feeling?" I am happy to respond that I have been feeling great and have had no morning sickness! This answer has gotten me many a dirty look from past pregnant women, and current pregnant women! One friend that I ran into at mass on Sunday (she is a few months along with child number 7 or 8 maybe) said to me, "if you aren't going to have morning sickness, then you need to have 12 kids!" I am perfectly ok with this, although it might work a little easier if I have 2 at a time every once in a while. I am not that young anymore!

So, yes I am 9 weeks today and one of the many websites I read about what my baby is doing in there has told me that the baby is now the size of a strawberry and officially called a "fetus" now...well I would like to skip the term "fetus" all together and stick with BABY! Let's be honest, call it what you want, but the miracle inside of me is a forming human being! A BABY, A LIFE...created by God (by the cooperation of my husband and I of course..no birth control or contraception needed!) Sorry, little soap box there for a a second....

Anyway--so yes, today I am 9 weeks and feeling great. I am looking forward to seeing a belly start to form, which I understand is a few months off yet, but, it will be fun to look down and see a belly and not just the fat that has been my belly for the better part of 30 years! =)

I'm off to shoot a wedding today...first wedding since discovering the miracle inside...I look forward to doing many more weddings and photo shoots as the kids keep coming...gotta put them through school somehow, if I am going to have 12! I'll post some of the wedding pics later!

  • The basic structure of the eye is well underway - The position is more "newborn" like already!
  • The tongue begins to develop
  • Intestines move out of the umbilical cord into the abdomen.
  • Body grows and makes room - Two months along and this little one is growing inside and out by leaps and bounds!
  • The fingers and toes have appeared but are webbed and short
  • Baby's length (crown to rump) is 0.61 inch (1.6cm) and weight is 0.04 ounce (1gm)

Traning...Travels....TRANSFORMATION!

Up to now this blog has been primarily about looking through my life's lens about training and travels...training for the half and my travels for work. While the travel blogs will still continue, the training as you know has come to an end. (YEAH!!) I guess we could now say, that I will blog as I train to be a mama! I will gladly blog about the joys of pregnancy, the growth of our baby, the fun moments as I go through this God given transformation...so maybe it should be called, "Transformation and Travels?"

I hope that these blogs will encourage other mothers to offer me advice, share their stories, and join in my understanding of these transformations. I hope that this will give encouragement to future mothers to see what God has in store for you..I hope that all just enjoy what comes across on these pages....

Who are you running for?

It was race day and we were as ready as we would ever be! We (Brian, Kristi, Jenny, Vince and Fr. Jonathan) had headed up to Cleveland on Saturday afternoon and went to the Race Expo to get our bib numbers, timing chips and a bunch of free stuff! We headed back to my parents house, where Fr. Jonathan said mass for us, and then dad made us an amazing homemade pasta dinner! We were well satisfied with all of our carbs!

We went to bed early to prepare ourselves for the early rise we had ahead of us! I was anxious and excited, so it took me a little while to fall asleep.

The alarm went off bright and early at 5:15am. As I rolled over to cuddle with Brian, his whispered to me, as he did so many mornings as I got up during training..."You can do it!" I got up and started moving slowly to get ready.

We woke up to rain. (Brian had prayed the night before that God would give us the perfect weather that we needed) Although the rain wasn't so fun, it did help keep the temperature down.

So, we finally got all of us out of the house and my dad drove us down to the starting line. We covered ourselves in white trash bags to keep ourselves dry. We jogged a few blocks to get to the starting line and had just a few minutes to wait before the official start. We got there just as they were letting the wheelchair racers go...wow! They amazed me! We chatted with fellow runners as we waited in the rain.

A few minutes after 7, the horn blew and we were off! About 5 minutes later Mom and I crossed the start line. I slapped the banner as we passed under it! We were off!

Before we knew it we were at the first water station, about 2 miles in. We both had to use the bathroom, but didn't want to stand in line at the port-o-potties, so we kept on moving.

Mom would run a bit ahead, but kept an eye on me. My leg was doing good, but I was still moving a bit slow. My breathing was a bit labored, but it finally evened out in a few miles.

I met up with Mom at the next set of Port-o-potties at the mile 4 marker. I couldn't hold it any longer, I had to wait in line. I decided to stop my watch while I waited for the bathroom, so I could get an accurate time.

Mom was kind enough to stick with me for the first 4 miles, but then I told her it was ok for her to go ahead. She was a bit concerned about leaving me alone, but I knew I would be fine. There were enough people around.

The rain finally let up after a while, coming back here and there. There were garbage bags, t-shirts, gloves, and sometimes even socks, all over the course that runners shed along the way.

I kept on truckin', enjoying the view of the lake, and answering the question "Who are you running for?" The Wellness Committee at Franciscan University, offered to get us shirts to wear during the race. The front of the shirt read "Franciscan University Runners" and the back said "Ask me whom I am running for?"

I chose someone different to run each mile for, so it made the journey much more personal. So my answer every mile was, "I am running for the Glory of God and this mile is for my dad, my baby, my sister, my husband, etc!" See below for who had which miles. It was really neat to hear peoples reactions as I told them my answer. I always thanked them for asking, it was nice to have them ask.

At one point I saw this older man, he had to be at least 60 or 65. He was walking fast and doing a little jogging, to the point that I almost didn't catch him as I was running. I was excited to catch up with him so I could encourage him along the way. As I finally did I said, "keep it up, Sir! You are doing awesome!! You inspire me!"

I made my way to the half-way point under 1:30 (according to my time) and was glad to see Brian, Adam and Dad shortly after the halfway mark. I saw Brian first waving his hands on the side of the road! It was sooo great to see him!!! Adam was taking pictures as I passed, and I jogged by Brian as I gave him a sweaty kiss! As I turned the corner, I saw Dad and he ran about 200 feet with me to the next turn! Brian was at the corner as well and cheered "Go Mama GO!"

I ran with a bottle of water and drank water at EVERY water station. A few things people told me about running while pregnant: Stay hydrated, don't overheat, and keep my heart rate under 140. So, I stayed hydrated and decided to walk a lot during the last few miles, due to keeping my heart rate down. The rain and cooler weather helped keep me from being overheated.

It was great to see how many Catholic churches we passed on the course...4 in total. Jesus was with me all along the way! Mile 10, mile 11, mile 12....I was almost there! My legs were sore, my back was sore. My quads were getting stiff. I would walk, but then I had to run again just to keep my muscles loose. I started thinking about Vince, who the day before had decided to do the whole marathon, even though he had just trained for the half. (GO VINCE!)

Shortly after I started mile 13, my mom came to run with me. She had finished in about 2:48 and was feeling pretty good. She ran along with me until I entered the gated area for the finish line. I could see the end in sight!! I was a little light headed at one point, so I ate a few raisins, and felt better.

About the last 2 tenths of the race, the runners were surrounded by spectators cheering us on! It was great! I passed two kids who were waiting there to have runners give them high 5's as they ran by, I was sure to take their gift of a High 5! They were excited that a runner finally came over to them. I kept on pushing and kept on running...the finish line was so close!

I saw Jenny just before I crossed, standing their proudly with her medal around her neck, cheering me on!! I was so proud of her for finishing! I couldn't wait to get my medal!!

I did it....I crossed the finish line! Arms up and all! It was glorious! I got my medal and couldn't believe it was over!

After I crossed, I saw Brian, I just wanted to jump the fence and jump into this arms, but I made my way through the rest of the fenced in area and he greeted me at the end. He hugged me and I just cried! I did it!! I was done!!!! I ran a half marathon! I couldn't believe it! I stayed there in his arms for awhile and just took it all in and enjoyed the moment.

Soon, Mom, Dad and Kristi were there to congratulate me as well. It was a great feeling!

My body was soo sore, that I could barley move, so I stretched as much as I could. I waited in line to get a massage and I was glad I did. Going to the bathroom was kind of a joke. My back was pretty sore! I saw a guy who had run the marathon, sitting there with a cold beer, eyes closed, just taking it all in, and I said "I bet that beer tastes great!" He smiled and said, "yeah ya know I do this just for the free beer! " I said "I do it for the free massages!" We both laughed! We realized that we both had to be a bit crazy for doing this, that we had to find some perks for it!

As I hobbled to bed last night, Brian said to me, "Well, was it worth it?" I quickly responded, "YES!" He later asked me, "Will you do it again?" I quickly responded, "Nope!" I really don't see me running another half-marathon. I don't think my body is cut out to be that kind of runner, but I will do other races, 5k's 10k's. But I will leave the longer races to others who are built for running like that. I look forward to doing a shorter race that I can run the whole time. I know I can do those shorter distances, because I have done them in my training.

So...this is the end of running for me until my legs recover. I plan to keep up some running or biking during my pregnancy, but no more training for me!

Thank you to everyone for all of your support, all of your advice and encouragement! You were a huge part of this accomplishment with me! It is not about the race...It is about the journey!!

Time for prayers!!!!!

I went out for a short run yesterday to loosen up a bit, and it was not a pretty sight! Kristi and I went out for a 2 mile run, and I was in a lot of pain!! I was hurting pretty bad this morning as I tried to walk down the stairs and walk period!

My leg pain was back and wasn't subsiding! I made my way back to the chiropractor and pleaded with him to make it all better! He gave me a look, that basically said "I don't know how much I can help you?" He did an adjustment and immediatley my leg started to feel better. He reminded me to proceed with caution and stay well hydrated during the race.

I left the office a little deflated....praying...."Lord, I have come so far, I really want to be able to finish this race on Sunday!" I know that I need to trust in the Lord and proceed with caution. "Lord give me the ears to hear you! Lord please hear my desire to be able to do this race!"

I came home after work and took a nap on the couch. I woke up and actually felt great!! My leg is doing really good!!! I will continue to take it easy until Sunday!

Oh and we are also praying for good weather!

Thump, thump......

WOW! That's pretty much all I can say, as Brian and I sat there and heard and SAW the heartbeat of our child for the first time! 132 beats/minute strong! It was AMAZING!! To see our Baby on that screen only 10mm big and see the heart beating, we were practically speechless!

Baby and Mommy are on our way to run a half-marathon! The stories our child will have to tell their friends!

Mystery solved!

So, as I have written about my muscle dilemmas the last few weeks. I have been going to the chiropractor and we finally discovered what was going.

Just as the doc came into the room, his wife walked by... she is a maraton runner..and I was telling her about my training and about my leg problem, and he had me do all these things with my leg, to see if it was other muscle problems. She had all these ideas of what it might be, giving me stretching suggestions, etc. Then he looked at my chart, but didn't say anything (the nurse who did my assesment wrote some "telling" information on my chart) and his wife just kept saying, "Maybe it's this, stretch this, etc, etc" He just sat there and smiled, and said "nope, that's not it" as soon as she left the room, he smiled and said "It's because you are pregnant!" I laughed! Who'da thought?!?!!?

Oh yeah, so up....I am pregnant!!! We found out about 3 weeks ago! We expect little Baby Meier to arrive January 4th!

So, doc went on to say, that because my uterus has already started to grow, it is pushing against a bundle of a vein, an artery and a nerve that runs under my quad muscle. He did some adjustments and I could already feel it starting to loosen.

So, we are on track and just a few days away from the big race!!! And Baby bean is doing great!

10 Miles Baby!!

My body revolted all day, and my brain tried to do the same, but I took control and pushed through!! We decided to do our 10 mile run on Wednesday after work. I was exhausted all day! I kept thinking all day, "I have no idea how this is going going to happen today!"

Vince, Jenny, Kristi and I were in it together to finish 10 miles!

We headed to the Panhandle Trail, I popped a cherry lifesaver, packed some raisins, had my bottle of water, and my GU (energy gel).

We decided to go 5 miles in and 5 miles out and drop our GU at the 3 mile mark, so we could pick it up on our way back at mile 7.

As we started to run, my ailing body slowed me down, so I told them to go ahead and leave me behind, I knew I would warm up in a bit, but I didn't want to hold them back. I had committed to finishing 10 miles, so I wasn't worried about doing it on my own. (Granted I wished I had my ipod to keep me company)

I am SO GLAD that I ran with water. (Thank you Liz and JM for that advice!) As I mentioned above, I also had raisins with me, (Thank you Jenny!) which are nature's little energy boosts!

I was feeling good and making my way. I realized at about mile 2 or 3... "Ok, I know I will make it to mile 5 and if I make it that far, I have to make it back, whether I am running or crawling I will make it back!" So, before I knew it, I hit mile 4, and I looked up and said "Thank you Jesus! I'm going to make it!" I passed my fellow runners who were on the turnaround, as I made my way to mile 5 and we all cheered each other on!

I made it to mile 5!! It was all downhill from there! I was praying that they left some more water behind at the mile 3 where our GU was and was overjoyed to see Kristi's water bottle sitting there, with some "liquid gold" in it! I had my GU and was back on my way after a little stretching. I had to stop a few times along the way to walk, usually for 2 minutes. Once or twice I walked for about 5 minutes.

I was feeling good! I was truckin' along. I was a little bored, so I decided to pray a rosary, which was a nice mental break. As I hit the last mile, I felt like it was a long mile, either because I had to pee, or I was just ready to be done!

I was happy to see Vince, Jenny and Kristi sitting at the 1/2 mile mark. Vince ran the last 1/2 mile with me!

I did it in 2:21:11!

I spoke with a friend of mine who also runs half marathon's, who said, if you can get a good 10 mile in before race day, the adrenaline will push you the last 3 miles.

So, half marathon here I come!!!

I've always loved being a cheerleader!

This is a true statement! When I was in gradeschool, I always wanted to be a cheerleader! After never making the squad in Junior High, my dream finally came true my freshman year in high school. I loved it! I have a loud voice, so I thought it best to put it to use!

Well, I am still a cheerleader at heart! I just put it to use in a different way today--and without the skirt!

We are at my parents house and my mom noticed this morning that there was a water station being set up outside of our house. I looked out the front window a few hours later and sure enough there were runners going by. My first thought was, "I want to go cheer them on!! " That is going to be me in a few weeks and I would love it if someone came and cheered me on! I know how that encouragement from a stranger can really help give you that boost to keep on pushing!

So, I brought my breakfast out to the porch and got vocal! "Come on!" "Keep Pushing!" "You're doing awesome!" "Way to go Ladies!" "Good Job!" "I'm proud of you!"

As I shouted out these words, I began to cry....I am thinking about my race day and the feeling of accomplishment, of reaching that goal, of knowing that it is possible! I have already had so many people encouraging me along the way during training and it has kept me going!

As I sit here, another man, about 75 years old, just trotted by, more of a walk than a run, but he's doing it! It's amazing what you can do when you make the choice!!

Muscles, shmuscles!

I am working on keeping limber, even though my body has been sore all week from the 9 mile run.  So, I went for a short run today...just 3 miles.  My feet felt good the whole time, so that was good, but I have a strained muscle in my left quad that I can't seem to shake, stretch or do anything!  It even hurts to walk.  If I am sitting down for too long,  it is painful to be moving again.  So, when I am walking or running, I feel like I have lost some range of motion.
Why are muscles so touchy!?  Arg!  Just 2 weeks until the race!  I can't believe the 12 weeks of training is almost done!
