Indianapolis Family Portrait Photographer: Parrish Family, Take 2

Indianapolis Family Portrait Photographer: Parrish Family Take 1

I had so much fun capturing the Parrish family a few weeks ago! I am so excited to share with you some of the images and I had too many favorites to just do one post, so there are 2! =)

Alicia had some great ideas of what she wanted for their family portraits and one of the things that was important to her was that their family was photographed in their familiar surroundings and where their kids play and live. We had a lot of fun creating together!

This is one reason that I prefer to come to a family's home to photograph them instead of have a studio. I want the little tyke's to be in a place that is familiar to them, I want to capture them in their environment with their toys, in the backyard they grow up playing in.

As the weather is getting warmer, it is time for booking family portraits, email me or call me today to get your session booked!

Documentation of Life Project: Week 20

A friend of mine came to me with an idea that she wanted to make a reality, and I was more than ready for the fun challenge and project! She is pregnant and saw this great blog years ago that documented the pregnancy week by week with a unique way of images. I told her, let's go for it! So, each week I will post the new image along with a note written to their sweet one as they await to meet their miracle face to face! I hope you enjoy this journey with Carrie and Andrew as we document the life growing before their eyes and within her womb!

A gift that keeps giving

This is our family portrait this year, taken by an aspiring photographer, Megan Matthews, who I was mentoring.

I have talked many times about the importance of getting family portraits done. It is a part of your family heirloom. Family portraits are what people look back on years down the road to remember family members who are no longer with us. It is a way to share your growing family with others who may live far away. I have heard from so many people, "I have been wanting to get new family portraits done for so long, and I keep putting it off!" Maybe this story will inspire everyone to make the decision to finally get them done, sooner, rather than later.

This letter was shared from a fellow photographer. It was written by one of her clients after she made the decision NOT to get her portraits done one year.

Jeanine -
Today I am writing for a couple of reasons. I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind. I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.
You photographed my wedding, you photographed my first pregnancy and my first baby. I contacted you awhile back to photograph my 2nd child and family. After getting prices and realizing I would want all of the pictures as we love your work – I decided against spending $500+ – which is what I normally spend for portraits and prints with you.. Please know it is not because I don’t value your amazing eye, or how much we love the experience.
That week that I decided to NOT do a session with you, this is how I spent some money.
On Sunday I called and cancelled our session. Monday I went out and got my hair cut ($39+tip), and colored ($65), Thursday I had my nails done ($24), my family went out to dinner at a somewhat expensive restaurant for no particular reason costing us $79 + tip. This was just 4 days since canceling our session, already totaling over $200 for un necessary things. My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor. It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly. I will be leaving my husband, my 6 year old girl and my now 2 year old – not by choice. It is very hard for me to talk about it which is why I need to write you.
I watch your Facebook page and your posts about the value of a photo and if I could give back all of those things that I purchased this few weeks after I cancelled my session with you, knowing what I know now, and have that session, well… I would do it in a heartbeat.
Now my time is done and there are no more chances for me. The next time someone cancels a session – my wish is that you forward this letter to them. Time is fragile, it is gone before you know you had it. If you charged $200 for one print it wouldn’t be enough for what it is actually worth. I cringe to think that my priorities were a manicure over a memory to pass onto my babies and husband.
My love and thanks for what you have given us from past photos. I am so sorry that I did not see it as more than paper until now.
So, with Valentine's Day just around the counter, I have the perfect gift for your loved ones! A family portrait session!! Contact me right away and I can send you your gift certificate via e-mail for you to print and wrap by Tuesday! Husband, have you had your wife asking you for years to get a family portrait done? Ladies, have your mother's or mother in laws been asking for an updated family portrait because the last one is missing a few of your children? Now is the time! Don't wait any longer!!

Resolutions vs. Goals

It is now February, although you wouldn't know it by the weather here in Indianapolis! It is like Spring here! I guess Mother Nature wanted to send some good graces upon the SuperBowl fans who are descending upon our city. Be that as it may...it is still February, which means by now, most people have abandoned their New Year's resolutions that they made just a few short weeks ago!

I am currently working with a business coach to grow my business, and it has done wonders for my motivation, not only in my business, but also my personal life. One of my homework assignments when we first started was to make a list of all the dreams of things I want to do or have or go in my life. Brian and I made this list together and it was really fun! Kinda like a huge bucket list, and a list of dreams all in one. I highly recommend such an activity! The next step was to narrow it down to the top 10 goals I wanted to accomplish this year. I think the mere practice of calling them goals, vs. resolutions creates a huge mind shift in making them happen.

Thanks to my new addiction, Pinterest, I saw a great idea that someone had created as a motivational poster of a bunch of words that they hung up. So, I decided to create my own based on my goals for the year. I then cleaned off my fridge and hung it up, so that it wouldn't get lost in the clutter. I LOVE IT! (Although I think I need to reprint it and laminate it, two boys makes for many kitchen messes. It has already smudged! And to prove that I am not perfect, I even misspelled a word...can you find it!? I should really hire a copy editor!)

I am thinking I might sell these on Etsy (my other new addiction). People send me their list and I create a poster for them! So motivating, right? Who wants to be my first customer?!

A Divine Appointment

After college I lived in California for two and a half years volunteering for a Catholic teen magazine. I was blessed to have the opportunity to travel a lot while I was there. I think I was on a plane more during those two and a half years than I had been my whole life up to that point.

My boss at the time, would often tell us to pray for divine appointments, especially while flying on a plane. You never know who God is going to put next to you. So, many times while traveling I would ask God for a divine appointment, and I would always come home with a great story about a great conversation I had with the person sitting next to me. People I will probably never meet again, but God knew we needed each other during that flight.

I haven't been on a plane in years now, and so I had forgotten about the concept of praying for a divine appointment....and even when I didn't pray for one, God delivered.

I had a meeting a few weeks ago and when I was driving home, I thought I would stop in at Panera for a quick lunch. My mother in law was watching the boys at home, and so I delighted in the thought of a quiet lunch reading my book....relaxing!

I got my food, found a quiet table by the fireplace and started reading...and noticed out of the corner of my eye an older gentleman find a seat at the table RIGHT next to me....instead of any of the other many empty tables in the place. No worries.....I kept reading. A few moments later a woman joined him, who I quickly learned was his daughter. They shared delightful conversation about family members and about his wife, who it sounds as if she had died somewhat recently. The gentleman noticed I was reading a book, instead of playing games on a computer like many others in the restaurant, acting like they were "working." We shared some nice conversation and a few laughs between the three of us, I told him about my photography business and he told me about his grandkids. He told me how his daughter told a new employer that she couldn't work on Thursdays, because that was the day she spent with her dad, and that made him feel special. I found that so precious!

As they were getting ready to leave, he turned to me and looked me in the eye and said, "You are going to do great with your business, honey! Keep up the good work!" I was so touched! Then as he got up to leave, he stopped in front of my table and asked me if I believed in Jesus, and I told him I did. He then reached underneath his sweatshirt and took off a necklace of a simple cross and some beads and said he wanted me to have this, and said, "You just remember that He loves you!" I thanked him, we shared another smile, and he was gone.

God knew I wasn't there to read my book that afternoon....He had a Divine Appointment set up for me, and I am glad I didn't miss it! The cross now hangs in my rear view mirror to remind me to look for those divine appointments and to know that God has His hand on my business.
