A Day in the Life: Superhero Tribute

This post is dedicated to my parents and siblings.

When we were young, my siblings and I played a game, that we probably called "Superheros."  We would put on our PJ's or quite possibly our under-roos, wrap our blankets around our shoulders to form our capes and fly into the living room to find our parents enjoying their evening television show and ask: "We are Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman! Have you see seen Adam, Ryan and Rachael?"  Our parents would respond, "Oh! You just missed them! We will tell them you stopped by!"  The superheros would fly off, making the appropriate "whooshing" sounds to indicate that we were indeed flying, as our blankets, I mean capes, flapped in the wind!"

Moments later, we would return, dressed in our clothes, entering as ourselves, and say: "Hi Mom and Dad!  Did anyone come to see us while we were gone!?"  Of course our parents would indulge us and say, "YES! You just missed Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman!"  When we would quickly respond, "Ah MAN! We will go look for them!"

You might be able to guess what happened next...Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman would appear! And the above scenario would play out...over....and over...and over...until it was bedtime. Or until Mom and Dad had enough!

Yesterday our boys, Jacob and Luke, aka Batman and Superman, wanted their capes on!  And of course mommy obliged!  I was so excited to tie their blankets around them just like we did and delighted in watching them fly around the house.  I had to get my camera out to capture the moment!

While they haven't quite figured out the game we played as kids, they for sure believed that they were Batman and Superman, and made the appropriate "whooshing" sounds as they flew!

As you can see in the images, they take their superhero duties very seriously!

Sweet Abigail just took in all in, safe in her superhero's arms....Daddy!
SUPER JACOB!
SUPER LUKE!

Our Superheros!
Safe in her superhero's arms!

Documentation of Life Project #2: Baby Sweetness 40 weeks

I promise I didn't wear pink on purpose today, but if Baby Sweetness turns out to be a girl, it will be perfect!  =)

Par for the course that my due date comes and goes....both boys were late and had to be evicted.  One can always hope for something different, but so far this baby is following suit with the older brothers!

Did I mention that patience is not one of my virtues!!?!  As I get to the end like this, I get pretty impatient!!  Not that I can do a whole lot to change that, I am just really excited to meet this baby! Ok, and for my hips to not hurt so much!  =)

Documentation of Life Project #2: Sweetness at 23 weeks

A wedding day is full of fun, energy, lots of walking and excitement!  A long day and so much fun!  Yet being pregnant adds a few extra challenges...I was pretty tired by the end of the day, but baby and I made it through with flying colors.  I have 4 more weddings for the season before little Sweetness arrives.

Documentation of Life Project #2: Baby Sweetness at 21 weeks

Moving right along in this pregnancy. We do not know the sex of the baby, and this drives a few of our friends crazy. Trust me, I want to know, too, but it is also worth it to me to wait for the surprise at the end!! Just because we can know does not mean we need to know. Some secrets are best left kept in this world of so much instant gratification.

A Day in the Life of the Meier Family: Valentine's Day Fun

As a photographer...I have a confession to make!  I forget to take pictures of my own kids!

Now that is not to say that I don't have hundreds, if not thousands of pictures of my kids.  The days they were born, daily pictures taken for the first year, endless adorable moments caught on our little point and shoot camera or my phone....I could go on and on....but I don't take out the big guns often enough. (read: "big guns" is my professional camera!)

I was recently helping a client put together an album of their family vacation at the beach and it inspired me to really get my family pictures in order. My poor kids are never going to know that photographs of theme exist, because they are all on my computer!  I want tangible albums for them to see and look through, not just scroll through on the computer.  So, it is one of my New Years resolutions to start that process.  (don't ask me how my progress is so far and DON'T remind me that it is almost March!)

All that being said--I do want to make sure I am capturing the daily moments of fun we have as a family. I want to bring out the "big guns" on a more regular basis.  So, hopefully in the future you will see more posts titled: "A day in the Life of the Meier Family."  I purposely did not do any editing on these photos, because I wanted them to feel real and in the moment with just the natural sunlight pouring in from the window.  Enjoy! And don't forget to read the captions! hehe!

ok--so I think my kids are kind of cute, so I wanted to post all of my 24 favorites...but I refrained...so if you want to see the rest....go here to my Facebook page and see more.  While you are there, "like" my page! I would like...no...LOVE it if you did!

Luke wasn't so sure he was ready to make cookies
Jacob was READY!!
A sweet brotherly hug that turned into a.....

Headlock!

he loves to blow kisses!
Did you catch it?

Here's one from both of them!
Time to get down to business
He goes all in!

Jacob was very generous with the sprinkles!!!
Luke was much more delicate with his sprinkle rationing
He left no cookie untasted!
I am a fun mommy! I made them each a cookie with a letter for their name, and I let them play with the sugar afterwards.  Jacob was quite red by the time he was done!

They were yummy and passed the daddy test!
PS: We made gluten free sugar cookies!  Just in case you are inspired, they were super easy! Here is the recipe!

Making Memories: Color Me Rad

My friend Amanda gets my blog emails (you can too by signing up at the bottom of my posts), and she remembered the one I wrote about the importance of getting pictures taken. This blog came to mind when her and her boyfriend, Daren decided to run the Color Me Rad race in Indianapolis and they wanted to document the event!  I was more than happy to get up on a Saturday morning and come and join in their adventure!  It was so fun to see how excited they were, especially Amanda.  She was so pumped and couldn't wait to start the race.  I had wanted to do this race a few months ago with some friends and it was sold out before we could even sign up.  It just looks like so much fun!!

So, even though I stayed out of the line of color shots, I for sure came home a little blue..hair, clothes and a dusting on the camera.  But it was so worth it!  You can see how much fun we had in the pictures.  Here are a few pages from the album I designed for them

Got a special event you want to remember in pictures?  Let me know!

Documentation of Life Project: Week 39

I can't believe this project is coming to an end. Tomorrow I shoot week 40!  (a few days early before I head out of town) I have been loving this project and hope another expecting couple asks me to do another one.  I think this might be one of my favorite ones of the belly, as you can see the whole shape of her belly!

Documentation of Life Project: Week 36

I love the images of Carrie when she is alone, but there is a whole new level of love when you had her beloved, Andrew!  They had 5 images to choose from this week and that is the best I could do to narrow them down! They are just so darn cute and precious and tender together, I love it! I particuarly love how is leading her in the far image.  So sweet!

Another fun thing about the shoot this week is that they came over for dinner afterwards for blueberry pancakes and waffles and we all consumed 2 pounds of bacon! YUM!!

Tastes of being Gluten Free

I am not sure I have blogged yet about our recent change in our diet in the Meier household.  And while it doesn't have any thing to do with photography, as a foodie, I can't help to share some yummy recipes every so often.  Back in February, I decided to remove gluten from our household.  The primary reason for my switch was to see if it's absence would help calm the moods down of my 3 year old son.  I have heard that sometimes gluten can be the cause of some behavior meltdowns in kids.  Now, I understand--he is 3 and with being 3 comes meltdowns, but I had an inkling to give it a a try and I can for sure say that since being off gluten I can tell a difference in him.  His meltdowns don't last as long, happen as often or seem as intense as they used to be.  I also have noticed how much better I feel as a result of cutting gluten out of our diets.  (Brian and I began this journey with doing a 3 week Detox cleanse, which resulted in us losing 30lbs between the two of us.  If you are interested in hearing more about this cleanse, let me know and I will be glad to blog about that too!)

So, back to the yummy recipe right!?!?  Knowing that we went gluten free, friends and family have been passing along recipes, which has been a delight!  In that spirit a few months back, my dad gave me a recipe that he picked up for gluten free cookies.  I will admit, I looked at the recipe, made a face at the ingredients and let it sit on my counter for months! It was basically peanut butter and brown sugar..how could that possibly make an decent edible cookie?!!?  I looked at the recipe countless times, even bought the crunchy peanut butter that was needed, but could still not bring myself to make these strange sounding cookies.

I finally gave in yesterday out of pure curiosity.  It came from Penzey's spice company and surely they wouldn't hand out a bad recipe, right?  That would not be good for business.

OH MY GOSH!  I can't believe  I had been missing out on these yummy, chewy, simply delightful and soooo easy to make cookies for months, because I was being stubborn!!!!!

I promise they taste as good as they look!!
You probably have all of these ingredients in your kitchen right now, except for maybe the crunchy peanut butter...so go get some and make these for dessert tonight!!!  I promise you will not be disappointed!!!
  • 1 Cup extra crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 Cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. PURE VANILLA EXTRACT
  • 1 Cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the peanut butter, brown sugar, egg, baking soda and vanilla. Fold in the chocolate chips. Spoon by the tablespoon onto parchment paper-lined cookie sheets and bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes, longer if you like your cookies crispy.

Ok--and so as not to make this post too much longer, but I must also share the recipe for these Gluten Free pancakes/waffles.  The original recipe is for pancakes, but made them as waffles as Jacob was influenced by an Eggo waffle commercial the other day and said, "Mommy I want waffles!"  They make GREAT WAFFLES!!! So, here you go a perfect gluten free pancake/waffle recipe for you!!  =) Thank you Gluten Free Goddess!

Dry ingredients:

1 3/4 cups brown rice flour
1/4 cup buckwheat flour (i used sorghum flour)
1/4 cup almond flour (which i just found in bulk at whole foods)
1/4 cup tapioca starch
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
3/4 teaspoon xanthan gum

Wet ingredients:

1 cup soy milk (or milk of choice) (i used almond milk)
1 cup water
2 organic free-range eggs, beaten
4 tablespoons organic coconut oil (i used canola oil)
1 tablespoon honey or raw agave nectar
1 teaspoon bourbon vanilla extract (i used regular vanilla)
1 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions:

Heat a griddle on medium-high heat. If your griddle requires greasing, do that now.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. Make a well in the center and add in the wet ingredients. Beat well to incorporate. Your batter should be silky and smooth. Not too thick.

Test the griddle by shaking a drop of water on it. If it pops and sizzles, your griddle is hot enough.

Using a ladle, pour a scoop of pancake batter on to the heated griddle. Repeat for as many pancakes as you can fit at one go.

When tiny bubbles have formed in the batter, carefully flip the pancakes with a thin flexible spatula. Cook a minute or two until firm- but don't over cook. Overcooking pancakes makes them tough.

To keep warm- or eat immediately?

The truth is- gluten-free pancakes are best eaten straight off the griddle- while hot and tender. If you keep these warm in the oven they may toughen a bit.

If the batter thickens as it stands, add a little more liquid to thin it.

This is all that remained after 2 batches of these waffles! The kids love them too!!

Documentation of Life Project: 31 weeks

Another super cute shot of that great belly!! I crack up when she tells me how many people think she is due any day now!

Documentation of Life Project: 30 Weeks

Hurray for 10 weeks to go!!! The baby was so excited that little bambino wanted to play "peek-a-poo" this week! I love pregnant women and how they glow, I love pregnant bellies and being amazed at the life that is growing and moving inside! I am loving this project, especially because it guarantees that I get to spend a few minutes with Carrie each week! She is a delight and a joy and I am so glad I met her (hint: DO NOT MOVE AWAY! And let's do lunch soon so we can have longer conversations!)

Business is good when...

I have 3 events in one day!  It was a great day of joy and celebration!

I started my day off bright and early with the 8th Grade Awards Ceremony at my church St. Louis de Montfort in Fishers.

Once all the awards were handed out and we got some great candids of the graduates that I had a little down time to go home and kiss the boys, the back to church to photograph the wedding of Jason and Angela (Espinosa) Hull.  It was a beautiful wedding mass to celebrate the start of their life together!

After finishing up the formal pictures with their family and friends, I headed out to the Bridgewater Club to capture the lovely ladies and gentlemen who were all dolled up for the Mayor's Yellow Tie Ball for the city of Westfield!  Everyone looked great and it was really fun to see how people took the "yellow tie" theme to heart, where black tie is optional, yellow tie is preferred! The story behind the ball is that Mayor Cook is colorblind and the only color he can see is yellow.  (I even went out to buy my husband a yellow tie to join me for the evening, but sadly, he was home sick.)

Here is just a small preview of the great day I had!  Tomorrow and Sunday will follow in similar photography fashion, as I have 2 engagement sessions to do!  Very excited!
